(Oil Painting of Mountain Lu, China)

Sung dynasty quatrain

Su Shi (1037 - 1101): Written on the Wall of Xilin Temple (at Mount Lushan)

1  A range in panorama, peaks if viewed from the side;

2  Far, near, low, and high, these summits differ wide.

3  The true face of Mount Lushan, O ‘tis so hard to tell,

4  Because this very mountain, has had me right inside.

Interpretation:

Su Shi/Sun DongPo wrote his feelings after he visited Mountain Lu . He didn’t portray any specific scenery; instead, he wrote about his general impressions of the mountain.

The poem aims not at depicting scenery or expressing the poet’s feelings; rather, it attempts to enlighten people with a philosophy on life – since people come from different backgrounds , it is inevitable that they see things from different viewpoints; therefore, their opinions are often one-sided and subjective. If we want to see things as they are, we should get rid of parochial opinions so that our judgments are untainted by personal prejudices. This poem resonates with me.

Gifted to: my Father for his 49th birthday
